Our first full day aboard the Norwegian Encore dawned with the excitement and tranquility that only an open sea can bring. As the ship gently rocked on the waves, we woke to the realization that we had nothing but the vast expanse of the ocean surrounding us. No land in sight, no destination for the day except to enjoy the myriad of amenities that the Norwegian Encore had to offer. This was a day to truly immerse ourselves in the cruise experience.
Morning: A Relaxing Start in the Taste Dining Room
The day began with breakfast in the Taste Dining Room, one of the ship's main dining venues. Taste offers a stylish and contemporary atmosphere that is both welcoming and elegant. The decor is modern, with clean lines and a subtle color palette that sets a peaceful tone for the morning. As we were seated, we immediately noticed the attention to detail that goes into every aspect of the dining experience on board.
The menu, which changes daily, was filled with a variety of options ranging from classic breakfast staples to more adventurous fare. I opted for a perfectly cooked omelet, while my spouse chose a stack of fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup. The food was accompanied by fresh fruit, pastries, and a selection of juices and coffee. What stood out was the careful consideration given to wine pairings—even at breakfast! While we passed on the morning wine, it was an intriguing option for those looking to start their day with a little something extra.
The service in Taste was impeccable. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, allowing us to enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace. It was a wonderful way to start the day, with the promise of more culinary adventures to come.
A Morning of Connectivity Challenges and Fitness Goals
After breakfast, I faced a less glamorous but necessary task—getting a reliable internet connection established on my laptop. The ship's network support station became my frequent haunt as I made several trips back and forth, working with the staff to troubleshoot and finally secure a connection. The internet on board was dependable, albeit slow, which is to be expected when you're in the middle of the ocean. It was a reminder that while modern cruise ships offer many of the comforts of home, there are still some limitations when it comes to technology.
With the internet issue resolved, it was time to focus on our fitness goals. We decided to take advantage of the ship's outdoor promenade deck, which offers a perfect place for walking or jogging while enjoying the fresh sea air. We spent the next hour and a half doing laps around the deck, taking in the endless horizon. The promenade deck is a popular spot for guests who want to stay active, and we found it to be a great way to get in our daily steps while also experiencing the unique sensation of walking on water, so to speak.
The view was nothing but open sea, with no land or wildlife in sight. It was a stark contrast to the bustling ports and scenic shorelines we would encounter later in the trip, but it had its own kind of beauty. The vastness of the ocean, the rhythm of the waves, and the occasional spray of sea mist created a meditative atmosphere. We didn't have many photo or video opportunities during this time, but the memories of the serene seascape are vivid in our minds.
Midday: A Culinary Experience at Savor Dining Room
After our morning walk, we returned to our stateroom to freshen up before heading to lunch. This time, we chose to dine at Savor, another one of the ship's main dining rooms. Savor is known for its ability to balance classic favorites with unique new dishes, making each dining experience a delightful exploration of flavors.
The decor in Savor is chic and modern, with a slightly more vibrant color scheme than Taste. The atmosphere was lively, with guests chatting and enjoying their meals, yet it still felt intimate enough for a quiet lunch. The menu at Savor is extensive, offering something for every palate. My spouse chose a beautifully presented salad, while I opted for a hearty bowl of soup followed by a grilled fish entrée. The flavors were fresh and well-balanced, a testament to the skill of the chefs on board.
One of the highlights of dining on the Norwegian Encore is the variety of options available at every meal. Whether you're in the mood for something light or a more indulgent dish, the dining rooms cater to all preferences. The staff at Savor were as attentive as those in Taste, ensuring that our lunch was both enjoyable and memorable.
Afternoon: Exploring the Ship's Amenities
With lunch behind us, we decided to spend the afternoon getting familiar with the other decks of the ship. The Norwegian Encore is a massive vessel, with countless amenities to explore. We started by visiting the observation lounge, a quiet space with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the ocean. It was the perfect spot to relax with a book or simply watch the waves roll by.
Next, we made our way to the ship's various entertainment venues. The Encore boasts a wide range of options, from live shows and music performances to an onboard casino and even a go-kart track! While we didn't participate in all of these activities on our first day at sea, it was fun to see what was available and plan for the days ahead.
One of our favorite discoveries was the Thermal Suite in the ship's Mandara Spa. This serene space features heated loungers, a hydrotherapy pool, and various saunas and steam rooms. We took a quick tour and decided that we would definitely be returning for a more indulgent spa day later in the trip.
As we continued our exploration, we also found the ship's fitness center, several pools and hot tubs, and a variety of shops and boutiques. Each deck offered something different, and it was exciting to see just how much there was to do on board. Even though we were at sea with no ports to explore, the ship itself was like a floating city, full of entertainment and relaxation options.
Evening: Dinner in The Manhattan Room
As the day began to wind down, we prepared for dinner in The Manhattan Room, the third of the ship's main dining rooms. The Manhattan Room is perhaps the most elegant of the three, with a grand atmosphere reminiscent of a New York City supper club. The decor is sophisticated, with dark wood accents, plush seating, and large windows that offered stunning views of the sunset over the ocean.
The menu in The Manhattan Room features a mix of modern and classic dishes, all made with the freshest ingredients. I chose a perfectly cooked steak, while my spouse enjoyed a delicate seafood dish. The presentation was impeccable, and the flavors were even better. We also indulged in a bottle of wine recommended by the sommelier, which paired beautifully with our meal.
Dining in The Manhattan Room was a highlight of our day. The service was, as expected, top-notch, and the ambiance was just right for a leisurely dinner. As we savored our dessert—a decadent chocolate mousse—we couldn't help but reflect on how much we had already experienced on our first full day at sea.
Planning for Juneau: A Preview of Tomorrow's Adventures
After dinner, we returned to our stateroom to relax and plan for the next day's shore excursions in Juneau. The anticipation of exploring Alaska's capital added a sense of excitement to the end of our day. We reviewed the options for excursions, from whale watching to glacier tours, and decided on two that we were particularly excited about the Mendenhall Glacier tour and next a whale watching excursion.
As we settled in for the night, the gentle rocking of the ship lulled us to sleep, with thoughts of the adventures that awaited us in Juneau filling our dreams. Day 2 aboard the Norwegian Encore had been a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and culinary delights. It was a reminder that even a day at sea, with no land in sight, could be filled with memorable experiences.
The next day promised even more excitement as we prepared to set foot in Alaska for the first time on this trip. But for now, we were content to drift off to sleep, surrounded by the endless ocean and the comfort of our stateroom. The journey was just beginning, and we couldn't wait to see what the rest of our cruise had in store.
