Waking up early on the third day of our Alaskan cruise was something I had been looking forward to since the moment we set sail. There’s a certain anticipation that builds when you’re cruising through some of the most pristine and untouched landscapes in the world. The sheer vastness of Alaska, combined with the intimate experience of being on the water, creates a sense of wonder that is hard to describe but impossible to ignore.
Morning on the Balcony: A Cloudy Sunrise Over Alaska
As the first light of dawn began to creep through the curtains of our stateroom, I could feel the excitement bubbling up inside me. The ship was gently cutting through the waters of the Alexander Archipelago, a group of islands known for their rugged beauty and remote wilderness. I slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Paulette, and made my way to the balcony. The air was cool and crisp, the kind that wakes you up and makes you feel alive.
With a steaming cup of coffee in hand, I set up my video camera to capture the unfolding scene. The sky was a blanket of clouds, tinged with the soft hues of morning light. Below, the distant mountains seemed to stretch endlessly, their peaks disappearing into the clouds. The tranquility of the moment was overwhelming. There was no sound but the gentle hum of the ship’s engines and the occasional call of a seabird in the distance.
As I sat there, taking in the view, I felt a deep sense of peace. This was what I had come to Alaska for—the opportunity to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life and reconnect with nature in its purest form. I sipped my coffee slowly, savoring the warmth as I watched the landscape shift and change with the rising sun. An hour passed like this, and by the time Paulette joined me, I was already on my second cup.
Breakfast and Morning Walk on the Promenade
With the morning well underway, it was time to fuel up for the day’s adventures. Paulette and I headed down to the Taste Dining Room on the 6th floor, one of our favorite spots for a sensible breakfast. The menu was simple but satisfying—fresh fruit, hot cereal, and just enough to keep us energized without feeling weighed down. There’s something about starting the day with a healthy meal that sets the right tone, especially when you know you’ve got a day full of exploration ahead.
After breakfast, we made our way to the Promenade on Deck 8 for our daily steps. One of the perks of being on a cruise is the ability to get in some exercise while enjoying the stunning surroundings. For a little over an hour, we lapped the ship, pausing frequently to take in the views of the passing islands and the dense, green expanse of the Tongass National Forest. Each time we rounded a corner, there was something new to marvel at—a waterfall cascading down a mountainside, a cluster of islands covered in thick forest, or the occasional glimpse of wildlife on the shore.
I spent much of that walk trying to capture the beauty on video, but eventually, I had to admit defeat. The camera simply couldn’t do justice to the wild remoteness, grandeur, and natural beauty that surrounded us. There’s a depth to the Alaskan wilderness that goes beyond what any lens can capture. So, I put the camera away and just let myself be present in the moment.
Planning for Juneau: Mendenhall Glacier and Whale Watching
Back in our cabin, it was time to prepare for the afternoon’s excursions. Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, was our next port of call, and we had pre-booked two shore excursions that I had been particularly excited about: a visit to Mendenhall Glacier and a whale-watching boat trip. As we packed our camera gear and rain jackets, I could feel the excitement building again. Alaska is one of those places where the weather can change in an instant, and being prepared is key to enjoying everything the state has to offer.
We took a moment to review our itinerary and ensure we had everything we needed. The forecast called for typical Alaskan weather—cool, with a chance of rain. But that didn’t dampen our spirits; if anything, it added to the adventure. There’s something about the ruggedness of Alaska that makes you embrace the elements, rain or shine.
Arrival in Juneau: The Capital City Unveiled
As we finalized our preparations, I noticed that the mountains seemed much closer than they had earlier in the day. Stepping out onto the balcony, I realized we were nearing Juneau. The shoreline, once a distant line on the horizon, was now clearly visible, with more and more residences coming into view. The city of Juneau itself began to take shape—a small, picturesque town nestled at the base of towering mountains.
The ship slowed to a crawl as we approached the narrow port, allowing us to fully take in the scene. We passed within a hundred yards of other cruise ships already docked, their massive forms towering above the water. Above one of the ships, I could just make out the chair lift terminal perched on the mountain top, a reminder of Juneau’s unique blend of natural beauty and modern amenities.
As we neared the pier, a new sound filled the air—the whine of turboprop engines. In the distance, we spotted two tour float planes, their bright colors standing out against the gray sky. They emerged from behind one of the docked cruise ships, passing gracefully in front of our ship before roaring off into the mist. It was a spectacular arrival, one that perfectly encapsulated the wild, adventurous spirit of Alaska.
