A Journey of Love and Discovery: Exploring the Pacific Coast Highway with My Beautiful Wife
For forty years, my wife has been my anchor, my inspiration, and my best friend. As we embarked on our bucket list journey up the Pacific Coast Highway 101 in January 2024, I was reminded once again of the many reasons I fell in love with her and why our bond has only grown stronger over the decades. This trip was more than a scenic drive; it was a celebration of our love and shared adventures, culminating in breathtaking moments and beautiful memories.
The Start of Our Adventure
The journey began with a sense of excitement and nostalgia. We had always dreamed of traveling up the Pacific Coast Highway, a route renowned for its stunning coastal views, rugged cliffs, and charming towns. As we packed our car and set off, the January air was crisp, filled with the promise of new experiences.
Crossing the Long Bridge at the Mouth of the Columbia River
One of the most memorable parts of our journey was crossing the long bridge at the mouth of the Columbia River. The bridge itself is an engineering marvel, stretching for miles and connecting Oregon to Washington. As we approached, the fog was so thick we could barely see half a mile ahead. The dense mist added an air of mystery and intrigue, transforming the landscape into a dreamlike scene.
Driving across the bridge, we felt a mix of awe and anticipation. The Columbia River, hidden beneath the blanket of fog, whispered secrets of its past. My wife, always keen to capture moments, took out her camera and started snapping photos, capturing the ethereal beauty of the fog-covered bridge. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I found myself appreciating the surreal atmosphere even more.
Onward to Forks, WA
Our destination for the day was Forks, WA, a small town nestled in the heart of the Olympic Peninsula. Known for its lush forests and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Forks has a unique charm that draws visitors seeking tranquility and natural beauty. The drive to Forks was peaceful, the fog gradually lifting to reveal the stunning landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
A Stop at Ruby Beach
Later in the day, we made a stop at Ruby Beach, one of Washington's most picturesque coastal spots. The trail leading to the beach was lined with ferns, their green fronds glistening with mist from a light rain. The path felt like a passage into another world, with the forest canopy creating a serene, almost magical atmosphere.
As we emerged from the trail onto the beach, we were greeted by a scene of raw, untamed beauty. The shore was littered with driftwood, remnants of ancient redwoods carried by the ocean's currents. Each piece of driftwood told a story of its journey, from towering forest giant to weathered coastal sculpture. My wife, with her keen eye for nature's artistry, immediately began exploring, marveling at the unique shapes and textures.
A Walk Along the Coast
We walked up the coast for about a mile, taking in the sights and sounds of Ruby Beach. Seagulls played in the surf, their calls echoing across the water. Massive tree-topped sea stacks emerged from the fog, creating a dramatic backdrop against the crashing waves. The mist gave the scene an ethereal quality, blurring the lines between sea and sky.
As we walked, I captured videos of our surroundings, wanting to preserve every moment of this incredible experience. My wife, ever the collector of nature's treasures, found a couple of pieces of redwood driftwood that caught her eye. She examined them with a smile, appreciating their unique forms and the journey they must have taken to end up on this beach.
Discovering the Sea Stack
One of the highlights of our time at Ruby Beach was discovering a large sea stack with an intriguing hole through its center. The sea stack stood like a sentinel on the shore, its rough surface shaped by countless years of wind and water. My wife, always adventurous, decided to walk through the hole, adding a sense of scale and wonder to the scene. I captured the moment on video, her silhouette framed by the ancient rock formation.
Watching her explore, I was reminded of the many adventures we've shared over the years. From hiking in national parks to exploring hidden beaches, we've always found joy in discovering the beauty of the natural world together. This moment, like so many others, was a testament to our shared love of adventure and our unwavering bond.
Reflections on Forty Years of Love
As we continued our journey up the Pacific Coast Highway, I found myself reflecting on the past forty years. Our marriage has been filled with countless moments of joy, laughter, and love. We've faced challenges together, supported each other through thick and thin, and celebrated each other's successes. This trip was not just about ticking off a bucket list item; it was about honoring the life we've built together and the many adventures still to come.
My wife has always been my partner in every sense of the word. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering support have been the foundation of our relationship. She's my rock, my confidante, and my best friend. As we explored the misty beaches and foggy coastlines of the Pacific Northwest, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the life we've shared and the journey that lies ahead.
